Catherine Mary Burns

Catherine Mary Burns, 98, of West Burlington, IA, passed away Sunday, October 8, 2017 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.The Rosary will be recited at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, October 12th at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. Visitation will follow at 9:30 a.m. at the Gathering Center. Funeral mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. also at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church with the Rev. Paul Connolly, celebrant. Interment will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Gifts of love and friendship may be given to Great River Hospice House or The Smile Train. On line condolences may directed to www.olsonpowell.com Catherine was born December 30, 1918, at Mason City, IA. Shortly after the death of her mother, Catherine Mary was raised by her grandparents. She was a graduate of St. Alphonsus High School in Mt. Pleasant. On May 12, 1942, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant, Catherine married Paul Thomas Burns. He preceded her in death on July 24, 2005.Catherine worked as a waitress in restaurants in Danville and Mt. Pleasant, and at the Danville School cafeteria. She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking and baking. She was especially known for her delicious apple pies, donuts and homemade noodles. Catherine was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Burlington and the Alter and Rosary Society of the church.Surviving Catherine are one son, Gary Burns of Baldwin, WI; three daughters, Paulette Cahill of Lake of the Ozarks, MO, Debbie (Kevin) Rice of Sperry, IA, and Connie Burns of West Burlington, IA; grandchildren, Jason, Jenny, Kelly, Jon, Brad, and Lori; and great-grandchildren, Pierce, Grayson, Anderson, Tucker, Riley, and Jasper.Preceding her in death were her husband; one son, Jim Burns; one daughter, Karen Burns; one sister, Rita Campbell; and one brother, Frank Jacobs.
