Williamsburg-Carl William Selby was born January 4, 1917, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Bert and Ellen (McFadden) Selby. In 1931, Carl's family moved to Bronson, Iowa where he graduated from Bronson High School in 1935. Following graduation, Carl attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. Before serving his country as a gunner's mate with the US Navy during WWII, Carl taught high school history at Wapello and Dike. On April 23, 1955, Carl was united in marriage to Agnes Weldon in Parnell. After the service, Carl signed a contract with Parnell School where he taught high school and elementary for 37 years before retiring in 1982. Carl's summer employment included Amana Refrigeration, Milwaukee Railroad, Component Homes, and in 1970, began working for Holden's Foundation Seeds Inc. Carl died Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at the Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg at the age of 95 years. Carl once said, "The difference between a rut and a grave, is that of dimension." He stated, "I never found that to be true." Carl is survived by five daughters: Vicki Wise (David) of Goshen, KY, Kati Selby of Juneau, AK, Leann Wilson (Joseph) of Parnell, Karla Gallo (Tony) of Grinnell and Donna Dyson (Dan) of Palm Bay, FL; four sons: Burt Selby (Dawn Folkman) of Parnell, Bill Selby of Colorado, Bob Selby of Parnell and John Selby (Kristin) of Boone; 13 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 1996 and a son Scott in 1973. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be 12:00 pm on March 16, 2013, with the family present from 10am-1pm at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg.
