Bonnie Rose Grover, 96, passed away December 10, 2010 at the Manor House Care Center in Sigourney, Iowa. Mother did more than triumph over tragedy; she outlived it. She returned home to her Heavenly Father and will be reunited with her husband Albert. Bonnie Rose was born August 19, 1914 at home in Waco, Texas to Thomas and Bonnie Belle Hall. She graduated from Waco High School in 1932, and attended Baylor University. As a career woman, she worked in her father's real estate business, was a manager at a downtown department store, and gave piano lessons. She met her tall handsome army man at a USO dance in 1942. Albert Edward Grover was stationed at Fort Hood, just outside of Waco. After he returned from WWII, they were married in February 1946. They lived in Texas until Albert's mother became ill and they were needed back in Iowa. The family resided first in Perry and Granger, Iowa and moved to the Grover farm southeast of Sigourney in 1954. Together they worked the family farm. Her husband died suddenly in May of 1959 leaving her with four young children and a farm to run. She persevered--even after a house fire the following year. She lived for her children and never remarried. Her faith in God, and her life-long community friends helped her through those difficult times. Bonnie Rose was a Baptist through and through, attending area churches, teaching Sunday School, and playing the piano. She loved to sing the old-time hymns. She was a long-time member of the Industrial Club, a ladies auxiliary. Bonnie Rose loved to crochet, garden, play bingo, dominoes and travel. She was a very strong independent woman ahead of her time. She lived a kind and generous life and was a great role model for us all. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Albert, sister, Mary Grace Smith, brother Thomas Harrington Hall, and infant son Charles. Surviving family members include her children, Albert Gladdin Grover (Deb) of Cedar Rapids, IA, Thomas Patrick Grover (Patricia) of Sigourney, IA, Joy Ione Grover of Ottumwa, IA, and Nona Jeannette McAlpin (Chris) of Salt Lake City, UT; grandchildren Jamie Grover (Carrie) and Mollie McAlpin; step grandchildren Adrian and Ash Feickert; sister-in-law Edna Mae Huneke of Keokuk, IA, and many nieces and nephews. Three special nephews back in Texas, Royce, Chester, and Ben Portwood, will miss Aunt Sis who helped raise them. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 15, 2010, at Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney, with Rev. Robert Preston officiating. Burial will be at Doggett Cemetery in rural Sigourney. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Sigourney First Baptist Church, 308 N. Jefferson Street, Sigourney, Iowa 52591. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Sigourney is caring for Bonnie and her family. Condolences may be e-mailed at www.powellfuneralhomes.com under obituaries.
