Blanche Rosina Montross was born on November 6, 1912, north of Millersburg, IA, the daughter of James McClelland and Laura Louise Emal Gerard. She graduated from Millersburg High School in 1930 and attended Cedar Rapids Business School. Blanche worked several years at the creamery in Millersburg. She was united in marriage to Hubert Maxwell Montross on June 25, 1934, in Kirksville, MO. They farmed northwest of Millersburg until moving into town in August 1965. Blanche was a member of the Millersburg United Methodist Church and the UMW. She and Hubert wintered in Florida and Texas for many years. She enjoyed her garden and belonged to the local garden club. She also liked camping, fishing and feeding the birds. Blanche died in her home on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at the age of 96 years, 6 months, and 27 days. She is survived by six children: Charles (Mary Ellen) Montross of Deep River, IA; Jeanette (Joe) Bender of Paris TX; Keith (Linda) Montross of Iowa City, IA; Linda (David) Slotwinski of Gainesville, FL; Phyllis (Donald) Gorsch of Millersburg, IA; James (Gloria) Montross of The Woodlands, TX.; 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Blanche was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in September 1990, 2 grandchildren, brothers Walter Gerard, Evan Gerard, Clayt Gerard, and Glen Gerard, and sisters Elsie Fetzer, Hazel Reinhart, Lulu Faas, and Mabel Tanke. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the Millersburg United Methodist Church with Pastor Ben Wilson officiating. Visitation will be at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English on Friday, June 5, 2009 from 4 PM to 8 PM. Burial will be in the Community Cemetery near Millersburg. A memorial fund has been established for the Millersburg United Methodist Church and Iowa City Hospice. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com under obituaries.
