Betty Marie Schaffner

North English- Betty Marie Schaffner was born April 28, 1931 in English Township, Iowa County, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur Edward & Alda (Fancher) Himler. She graduated from Millersburg High School in 1949. On January 11, 1951 Betty was united in marriage to Russell Benjamin Schaffner. They farmed around the Millersburg area. Betty was a homemaker and farm wife, sold Avon, did babysitting and was a cook for Deep River Millersburg School district for 19 years, she was also a summer cook for East Iowa Bible Camp occasionally. Betty was a member of the Millersburg Methodist Church. She enjoyed going to auctions and garage sales, cooking, square dancing, playing cards and playing and communicating with young kids. She also enjoyed trying to keep up with all the Millersburg people that she knew. Betty died on Sunday, May 20, 2018 at the English Valley Care Center in North English, at the age of 87 years.

She is survived by her seven children: Gary (Marnita) Schaffner, Patricia (Arlen) Fisher, Stephen Schaffner all of North English, Charlene Oehl of Millersburg, Mary (Bryan) Greene of North English, David Schaffner of Deep River and Deborah (David) Grimm of Millersburg; 21 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren; and all others who called her grandma and mom. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Russell; brother and sister- in-law Dick & Bonnie Schaffner; and a great granddaughter Joely Jane Schaffner.

Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 24 at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. David Grimm will officiate. Burial will be in the Zion Cemetery north of Millersburg. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home. A general memorial fund has been established.
