Betty Ann Nicholls

Wellman- Betty Ann Nicholls was born November 5, 1922 in Decatur, Illinois the daughter of Henry and Julia Nadine (Ruck) Walther. Graduated from Decatur High School and Millikin University. On February 16, 1941 she was united in marriage to Herbert Nicholls in St. Charles, Missouri. They lived in Wellman from1953-1977, they then moved to Iowa City and returned to Wellman in 1987. Betty worked at the University of Iowa as a secretary for 17 years before retiring in 1984. She was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, attended the Bible Friends Sunday School Class, and served on the worship committee for many years. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, ALC Club, PTA and was a Cub Scout leader. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, singing, crafts, painting and wood working. Betty died on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City at the age of 92 years.
Betty is survived by her five children: Jerry (Judy) Nicholls of Coralville; Anne Nicholls of Wellman; Donald (Judy) Nicholls of Cedar Rapids; Michael (Priscilla)Nicholls of North Liberty; and Julia (Phillip) Stephens of Buckner, MO. 20 grandchildren; 42 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; two half brothers J.D. Travis and Charles Travis of Decatur, IL; and three half sisters Mary Teschner of Decatur, IL; Margaret Tubbs of Fallbrook, CA; and Hazel Murphy of Monmouth, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Herb in 2004 and a grandson Michael.

Celebration of Life Service will be held 2:30 pm Saturday, December 13, 2014 at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Wellman. Pastor Moody Colorado will officiate. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 3-7 pm with an Eastern Star Service at 7:00 pm. A memorial Fund has been established for Asbury United Methodist Church and the Wellman Senior Center.
