Betty June Smith Alton, 88, of Sun City, Arizona, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, died Sunday, February 12, 2012 in Sun Valley Lodge, Sun City, Arizona. A visitation will be held 9-10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel where the family will receive friends. A funeral service will follow at 10:30 at the Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Burge Cemetery in New London. Memorials have been established to the First United Methodist Church of Mt. Pleasant, the New London Christian Church, and Sun Valley Lodge of Sun City, Arizona. The daughter of Carrol and Bessie Hay Dell, Betty was born on May 19, 1923 in Durant, Iowa. On February 20, 1943, she married Master Sgt. U.S. Marine Corps J. P. Smith. He preceded her in death on August 26, 1986. Betty married Robert Alton, Sr. August 3, 1991. Bob preceded her in death December 22, 2007. Betty graduated from Bushnell Illinois High School in 1941, and Liberty School of Cosmetology, Peoria Illinois, in 1942. Betty was a homemaker, working part-time for Drs. Readinger and Vaughan in New London. Betty was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the New London Christian Church. She was a member of Chapter NZ, P.E.O., the Mt. Pleasant Country Club, HCHC auxiliary, Mt. Pleasant, Woman's Club, and New London Mothers' Club. She enjoyed golf, sewing, and cross stitch. Family was very important to Betty, enjoying grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Betty is survived by two daughters, Carrol D. (Leroy) Stukerjurgen of Sun City, Arizona, Janet L (John) Roederer of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and step son Robert (Carol) Alton Jr. of Mankato, Minnesota; three grandchildren, Jon A. (Cindy) Phillips of Janesville, Wisconsin, Angie (Tony) Nuetzman of Gilbert, Arizona, and Jennifer (Darin) Stater of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; four step grandchildren, Jocelyn Alton of West Palm Beach, Florida, Lindy (Ian Dille) Alton of Austin, Texas, Nicole (John) Alton-Moore of Worcester, Massachusetts, and Robert Alton III of Austin, Texas; and five great-grandchildren, Jordan L. Phillips, Iowa City, Iowa, Zachary and Kyle Nuetzman of Gilbert, Arizona, and Hannah and Paige Stater of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Betty is preceded in death by her husbands J.P. Smith and Robert Alton; her parents, and two sisters, Joan Burke and Verla Bryan.
