Bernice I. Van Amerongen, 100, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, passed away Monday, September 23, 2019, at Henry County Health Center.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, September 27, 2019 at Faith Lutheran Church with Reverend Mike Scudder, officiating. The family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Forest Home Cemetery. Gifts of love and friendship may be given to Faith Lutheran Church. Born May 17, 1919, in Winfield, IA Bernice Iona, was the daughter of George and Mariana (Molander) Haushahn. She was a 1937 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. On November 8, 1942, in Kahoka, MO, Bernice married Dan W. Ford, who died October 1, 1973. She then married Gary Van Amerongen in Mt. Pleasant, IA, on January 11, 1980. He preceded her in death on March 21, 2014.
Bernice was a waitress for 30 years at the Hi Hat Caf and was co-owner of the B B Caf for several years. She loved animals and enjoyed cooking, baking, reading, and walking. Bernice was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and supported the Oakland Mills Nature Center.
Survivors include nephew, Kirk (Shirley) Haushahn of Gilbert, AZ; stepson, Don (Annie) Van Amerongen of Salem, IA; step granddaughter, Jerri Lynn (Matthew) Gingerich of Dallas, TX; and sister-in-law, Ruperta Haushahn of Las Vegas, NV. She is also survived by two step great-grandchildren, Zach and Morgan Gingerich and great-niece, Shellie Lutz.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; brother, Bernard Haushahn; and nephew, Michael Haushahn.
