Bernard M. Hershberger was born September 20, 1924 in Milford, Nebraska the son of Paul and Nettie (Miller) Hershberger. At age 11 he moved to the Wellman community with his family. He graduated from Center High School near Kalona in 1942. On September 15, 1946 he was united in marriage to Neva Lou Jantz in Newton, Kansas. Bernard worked for Buckwalter Motors in the Auto Parts department for 20 years before retiring in 1990. He was a very active member of the Wellman Mennonite Church where he often sang in a men's quartet. He was a lifetime member of the Mennonite Historical Society and Archives of Iowa, member of the Wellman Heritage Society, and he sang with the Old Capitol Barbershop Chorus for 10 years. He enjoyed wood working and sports. Bernard died on Saturday, January 12, 2008 at Parkview Manor in Wellman following a brief illness at the age of 83 years. Bernard is survived by his wife Neva Lou of Wellman; a son Bernard J. Hershberger and wife Janet of Marengo; 2 daughters - Gloria Hershberger of Aurora, Colorado; Rita Trimpe and husband Bob of Williamsburg; 5 grandchildren - Bradley Hershberger and wife Michelle of St. Louis, Missouri; Angie Klaver and husband Jadon of Des Moines; Brian Tadlock of Coralville; Cal Trimpe and wife Jessica of Williamsburg; Cam Trimpe of Las Vegas, Nevada; 2 great grandsons - Ethan and Will Trimpe; and 2 sisters - Shirley Swartzendruber of Grand Junction, Colorado; and Glennis Hochstetler of Denver, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial fund has been established for Mennonite Board of Missions and Washington County Hospice.
