Bernard Eugene Lowe, age 88, died on Thursday, April 14, 201, at the English Valley Care Center in North English. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at First Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg. Pastor Kip Murphy will officiate. Military rites will follow. There will be no visitation. His ashes will be scattered in Pennington Cemetery, rural Sigourney at a later date. Powell Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. Bernard was born on October 19, 1922, near Sigourney, Iowa, a son of Clayton and Sophie Duensing Lowe. He graduated from Sigourney High School, enlisted and served in the US Navy during World war II. Bernard was united in marriage to Charlene Marie Banes on November 17, 1952, in Sigourney, Iowa. While they lived in Swisher, Bernard worked at Wilson Packing Plant in Cedar Rapids. They later moved to Las Vegas and lived there 22 years before moving back to North English. He was a past Commander of the Swisher American Legion and a life-time member of the VFW. Bernard became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in December 2010. Bernard is survived by his wife Charlene of North English, IA; a daughter Vicki (Lyle) Carter of Williamsburg, IA; sons: Steven Lowe of Cedar Rapids, IA and Duane Lowe of Las Vegas, NV; five grandchildren: Samantha Lowe, Chad (Kara) Carter, Katie Carter, Stephanie & Alicia Broadwater; and a step-great granddaughter Ava Garcia; two brothers Jack Lowe of South Amana, IA, and Don Lowe of Arkansas; three sisters: Ilene Anslley of Newton, IA; Vernalda Yahn of Richland, IA; and Eva Thayer of Madison, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Bert & Roy Lowe, sisters Jean Yates, Doris Crossett and Louise Young.
