Williamsburg- Barbara Marie Torney, was born November 4, 1941, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Ezra Smith & Besse Lorena (Beard) Calhoon. She graduated from Ames High School in 1959 and went on to get a B.S. degree in Geology in 1963 from Iowa State University, a M.S. degree in Geology in 1983 from the University of Iowa and a M.S. degree in Environmental Science & Engineering from the University of Iowa in 1988. Barbara was united in marriage to Donald Torney on January 5, 1963, at the First Baptist Church in Ames. She worked for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources as an Environmental Engineer and for the Howard R. Green Company as a Hydro-geologist in the late 80's and 90's. Barbara was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Williamsburg and the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed spending time with her children & grandchildren, traveling to visit relatives and our national parks, collecting rocks & fossils, music and making sock monkeys. Barbara died on Monday, March 17, 2014, at the Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg at the age of 72 years. She is survived by her husband Donald of Williamsburg,two daughters: Susan Torney of Kemah, TX and Linda (Jeff) Wille of Williamsburg; four grandchildren: Sarah, Nathan, Tyler and Kaitlin Wille; and a brother Clair Calhoon of Walnut Creek, CA. She was preceded by her parents and a brother Max Calhoon. Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held 11:00 AM on Friday, March 21, 2014, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Williamsburg. Pastor James Parks and Pastor Gary Van Heukelom will officiate. Burial will be 11:30 AM on Saturday in the Osage Cemetery, Osage, Iowa. Visitation will be on Thursday, from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the St. Paul United Methodist Church Building Fund.
