Williamsburg- August Byron Steffen was born August 7, 1918, in Pilot Township, near Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of August Lewis and Lillian Bertha (Schwertfeger) Steffen. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1936. He was united in marriage to Shirley Margaret Faas on August 31, 1940 at the Eden United Church of Christ in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. August farmed and later worked as a machinist- head drillman for Kinze Manufacturing, retiring in 1983. He was a lifetime member of Trinity United Church of Christ, in Marengo serving as an elder, deacon and a trustee. He served as township trustee for the North Pilot School Board in Pilot Township. He was a member of the Lions Club and Stone Creek Country Club. He was a life long resident of the Williamsburg Community and has wintered in Pharr and McAllen, Texas since 1984. August died Monday, September 24, 2007, at the Highland Ridge Care Center, in Williamsburg at the age of 89 years, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife Shirley of Williamsburg; two daughters: Karon (Del) Smith of Madison, WI and Karol (Larry) Roehrkasse of Stillwater, MN; a son August C. Steffen of Stilwell, KS; 8 grandchildren: Olivia Hornig, Rachael Rahn, Aaron Smith, Stephanie James, August Kyle Steffen, Mackenzie Steffen, Mallory Steffen, and Faith Steffen; 9 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Arnold, Rueben and Edwin Steffen. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, September 27, 2007, at Trinity United Church of Christ, in Marengo. Officiating will be Rev. Robert Loffer. Burial will be in the Zion Cemetery. Visitation will from 4-7 pm Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg.
