KEOTA-Arleta G. Barnum, age 90, of Keota, died Saturday, January 22, 2005, at the McCreedy Home in Washington, following a brief illness. Arleta was born April 28, 1914, in Clayton County, Iowa, near St. Olaf, to Andrew O. and Nellie (Nelson) Wold. She grew up in St. Olaf, graduated from Elkader High School and received normal training. Arleta taught lower elementary school in St. Olaf for six years. On August 10, 1939, she married Verdine H. Barnum in St. Olaf. Following marriage the couple lived in Pomeroy until 1944, when they moved to Kalona. They settled in Keota in 1954. Arleta was a member of the United Church of Faith, Chapter CM P.E.O., Fortnightly Club and Women United and enjoyed making scrapbooks, sewing, quilting, playing bridge and camping in her younger years. Survivors include two children: Sandra Lawrence and husband Tom of Solon and Dean Barnum and wife Karla of Mishawaka, Indiana; two granddaughters: Nicole and Danielle and one brother: Burdette Wold of Monona, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband: Verdine in 1977. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 26, 2005, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota with Pastor Sallie Graves officiating. Burial will be at Keota Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at the funeral home. A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.
