Arlene Carter was born east of Keswick, Iowa, on June 5, 1914, to Fint and Orpha Ackley Hall. A graduate of Keswick High School in 1932, Arlene attended Iowa State College at Ames and State Teacher's College at Cedar Falls, then taught rural school for several years. Following her marriage to Harley (Pat) Carter on June 8, 1932, in her family home, the couple farmed near North English until moving into town in 1972. Arlene was an active member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women's Society. She joined the Rebecca Lodge in 1949, serving two terms as Noble Grand. Arlene enjoyed volunteer work at the English Valley Care Center from its 1973 opening until 2000. Arlene helped organize the Care Review Committee in 1974, and acted as Chairwoman for twenty-seven years. For her dedication to community service, Arlene received both the Governer's Volunteer Award and the Kirkwood Heritage on Aging Award in 1999. She moved to Highland Ridge in Williamsburg in 2004. Arlene died July 3,2009, at age 95. Arlene is survived by: son Arnold (Janice) Carter of North English, daughters Carolyn (Bob) Tilton of Edina, MN and Carma (Tom) Newman of Hinsdale, IL; six grandchildren: Chris (Meredith) Carter of Iowa City, Cathy (Bill) Reynolds of WI, Jennifer (Andy) Young, Staci (Nate) Hase, Cara Newman and Susan Newman; eight great-grandchildren: Brady, Logan and Katherine Carter, Cedric and Kynan Reynolds, Logan, Jayden and Skylar Young; sister Doriss Ryel of CA, and sister-in-law Phyllis Hall of Highland Ridge. Arlene was preceeded in death by her husband Harley (Pat) (1996), son Roger (1965), parents, and brother Weldon Hall (1994). A private family graveside service will be held in the North English Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, July 6, 2009 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM. A memorial fund has been established in Arlene's name in lieu of flowers.
