Aretta M. Van Dorin

Aretta M. Van Dorin, 90, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, passed away Monday, October 5, 2015, at Sunnybrook Assisted Living in Mt. Pleasant. A visitation will be held from 12 noon - 7 p.m. at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, on Thursday, October 8, 2015, where the family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. that evening. A funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, October 9th, at the Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Earl Swigart officiating. Interment will be in Forest Home Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Calvary Baptist Church and Mt. Pleasant Public Library. Born December 18, 1924 in New London, IA, Aretta was the daughter of Hollis and Goldie (Clark) Standley. She graduated from Hillsboro High School where she was a 4-year letter winner in basketball. She also played softball and tuba. In August of 1942, she married Newton Eugene Van Dorin in Kahoka, MO. He preceded her in death on July 25, 1992. Aretta was a homemaker. She worked outside of the home as a line worker at the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant in Middletown and Sheaffer Pen in Mt. Pleasant. She had, also, worked at J L Steakhouse in Mt. Pleasant. An active member of Calvary Baptist Church, she participated in Bible study and the widow's group. She loved gardening and taking care of her flowers. Aretta was known for her delicious pies and grape jelly. She made numerous quilts for her family. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren playing games. Favorite hobbies included watching sports, especially the Cubs, and she was an avid reader. Survivors include four sons, Gary (Mary) Van Dorin, David (Sharyl) Van Dorin, all of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Stan (Paula) Van Dorin of Burlington, IA and Kevin (Shelley) Van Dorin of Mt. Pleasant, IA; eight grandchildren, Rick (Laurie) Van Dorin, Scott (Deb) Van Dorin, Stacie (Steffen) Hoche, Angie (Paul) Hott, Shane (Candy) Van Dorin, and Emily, Sarah, and Zach Van Dorin; eight great grandchildren, Josh (Amber), Jessie, Shantel, Amanda, Cody, and Allison Van Dorin, and Sydney and Tyler Hott; one great-great grandchild, Holli Van Dorin ; and a nephew, Don Standley, of Mt. Pleasant, who spent time living with the family. Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband, Newton; and five brothers, Dale, Clyde, Don, Dean, and Clarence Standley.
