Amil Gene Goschke (A.G.) was born March 4, 1922 in Eddyville, Iowa the son of Amil Frederick and Maud (Belzer) Goschke. He graduated from Eddyville High School. After high school Gene joined the 113th Calvary stationed in Brownwood, Texas. He then served in the Army Air Force Training Command until 1945, serving as a flight instructor. On May 29, 1942 he was united in marriage to June Newell in Brownwood, Texas. In 1947 the couple moved to Wellman where they owned and published the Wellman Advance for 43 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and Honorary Deacon, past member of the Wellman City Council and Wellman Community Club, 50 year member of the Wellman Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, 50 year member of Dayton Lodge #149 A.F. & A.M., and FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer. Gene died on Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at the Parkview Manor in Wellman following an extended illness at the age of 84 years. Gene is survived by his wife June B. Goschke of Wellman; four children, Douglas (Ann) Goschke of Ottumwa, Junean (Tim) Witham Grady of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Pam Goschke (Tim Meyer) of Amana, Sue Ann (Gary) Gravert of Albia; 8 grandchildren, Chandra (David) Reimer, Douglas Amil Goschke, Jason (Tara) Witham, Jeremy (Kelli) Witham, Sarah, Katie, Jessica, and Gabe Gravert; 3 step grandchildren, Eric (Sarah) Blomme, Samantha (David) Wiese and Tony (Annette) Blomme; 4 great grandchildren, Carah Reimer, Douglas Wiese, Julian Rivera, and Jacob Witham; 2 sisters, Clarice Stoos of Oskaloosa, and Phyllis Chambers of Eddyville, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister Gladys Katko.
A memorial fund has been established for the First Baptist Church, Wellman Senior Center or Wellman-Scofield Public Library.
