Allen Gerig

Allen Gerig, 85, of the Mt. Pleasant and Wayland communities died Thursday, December 30, 2010 at the Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield, IA. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 2, 2011 from 2-6 p.m., at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel in Mt. Pleasant, where the family will greet friends from 2-4 p.m. that afternoon. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 3rd, at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel with Reverend Larry Evers officiating. Burial will be at the Forest Home Cemetery. Memorials have been established to the Eicher Mennonite Church and Gideon's International. The son of Martin Conrad and Emma (Nofziger) Gerig, Allen Martin was born on August 19, 1925 at the family farm near Wayland, IA. He attended Maple Grove School. On March 7, 1948, he married Mary Kathryn Landis. Allen worked at Archer Oil Petroleum as a District Manager for 18 years. He farmed in rural Wayland for 20 years before moving to Mt. Pleasant in 1969-1988. After retirement he and his wife moved back to Wayland. An avid hunter and fisherman, Allen spent many hours hunting and fishing with his buddy Skeet. He also was involved with area farmer's markets along with his friend, Glenwood. From 1942-1945 he served with the Civilian Public Service. He was a member of the Eicher Mennonite Church and Gideon's International. Survivors include his wife, Mary Kathryn "Marikay" of Mt. Pleasant; four daughters, Kathy (Don) Wiley of Mt. Pleasant, IA Carol (Dave) Allender of Kent, OH, LuAnn Sandy of Mt. Pleasant, IA and Lori Mallams of North Liberty, IA; three brothers, Laverne (Luella) Gerig of South Bend, IN, Emanuel Gerig of Corvallis, OR and Elmer (Florence) Gerig of Albany, OR; one sister, Minnie Chaffee of Wauseon, OH; eleven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Mabel Miller, Mary Gerig, Francis Yutzy and Elsie Gerig; three brothers, Willard Gerig, Melvin Gerig and Emery Gerig; and one son, Reginald Allen Gerig.
