WEBSTER-Allan Richard Starry, age 70, of Edmonds, Washington, formerly of Webster, died Tuesday, July 12, 2005, at his home after a long battle with leukemia and lymphoma. Allan was born September 13, 1934 in Webster, Iowa, to Eldon E. and Nelle (Sorden) Starry. He received his B.S. from the University of Iowa, M.S. from Purdue University and Ph.D. in Industrial Psychology and Engineering Statistics from Purdue University. Allan was a professor of educational and industrial statistics at Purdue University from 1963 until 1980 and became the executive director of the Washington Pre-College Testing Program through the University of Washington in 1981. He retired in 1992. Allan published graduate-level statistics textbooks, short stories and poems. He loved to write stories of his early days growing up in Iowa to share with his grandchildren. Allan played the trumpet, french horn and guitar and wrote numerous musical compositions to share with friends and family. He also traveled with the 5th Army Band while he was stationed with the Special Services Unit in Washington, DC and Chicago, Illinois. Allan enjoyed live steam trains, auto racing, vintage autos, power boats and hydro racing, hiking and exploring the Washington coastline and mountain ranges and spending time with his beloved family and friends. Survivors include his wife: Cherie of Edmonds, Washington; one son: Brent of Baraboo, Wisconsin; two grandchildren: Elizabeth Starry and David Starry of Portage, Wisconsin; one sister: Roberta L. Kerr and husband Chuck of Indianola and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Celebration of life services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 18, 2005, at the Webster United Methodist Church with Pastor Don Ridenour officiating. Burial with military rites by Lacey Kerr V.F.W. Post #2308 and Am. Legion Post #19 will be at Sorden Cemetery in rural Webster. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 18, 2005, at the church. A memorial fund has been established for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the local arrangements.
