Kalona- Alice Viola Hochstedler was born February 28, 1933, in Johnson County, Iowa the daughter of Daniel G. and Fannie ( Jantzi) Gingerich. Alice was born and raised in the Kalona area. On March 22, 1953, Alice was united in marriage to J. Wesley Hochstedler at the Fairview Mennonite Church. She worked at Yoder's Research Farm for 15 years, cleaned houses in Iowa City for many years, and built great friendships with her clients. She was a member of Sunnyside Mennonite Church where she had been active in the women's sewing circle and taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school. She was a care giver for her husband for a number of years. Alice enjoyed spending time with family, and was a supportive mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Alice passed away at her home Thursday, September 14, 2017, at the age of 84 years.
Alice is survived by seven children: Joy (Leon) Miller of Haiti; Leon (Fran) Hochstedler of Delaware, Ohio; Doyle (Becky) Hochstedler of Kalona; Audrey (Bud) Miller of Iowa City; Myron (Cathie) Hochstedler of Kalona; Phyllis (Mark) Miller of Mechanicsburg, Ohio and Ginny ( Phil) Wenger of Wellman; 25 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren, a sister Ella June (Eldon) Miller of Rowdy, Kentucky, and two sisters-in-law: Ada Gingerich of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Clara Gingerich of Iowa City, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband J. Wesley in 2007, a grandchild Ryan Hochstedler and six siblings: Alvin Gingerich, Verton Gingerich, Ivo Gingerich, Nina Miller, George Gingerich and Leslie Gingerich.
Celebration Of Life Service will be 10:00 AM Monday, September 18, 2017 at Sunnyside Mennonite Church. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday, September 17, 2017 from 1:00 to 7:00 pm where the family will greet friends from 1-4 and 5:30-7 pm at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for Sunnyside Mennonite Church and Water For Life. Yoder-Powell Funeral Home is caring for Alice and her family.
