SIGOURNEY-Alfred Z. Wallerich, age 91, of Sigourney, formerly of Richland, died Monday, August 18, 2008, at the Sigourney Care Center, following a brief illness. Alfred was born June 4, 1917, near Richland, to Michael and Celia (Hahn) Wallerich. He attended country school near his home and graduated from Ollie Consolidated High School in 1935. On June 4, 1940, he married Freda Gillam at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple lived and farmed in the Richland area all their lives. Alfred was a lifelong member of the South Keokuk Church of the Brethren until it closed, then attended the Ollie Baptist Church until moving to Sigourney in 2002. Alfred enjoyed walking, reading, tending to the farm and gardening. Survivors include his son: Gary Wallerich and wife Jan of Sigourney; daughter: Cynthia Wallerich of Augusta, Georgia; four grandchildren: Jeff Wallerich of Sigourney, Tonya Thompson of Denver, Colorado, Erin Howard of Olathe, Kansas and Jonathan Wallerich of Des Moines; four great grandchildren: Meredith, Olivia and Sophie Wallerich and Charlie Thompson and sister: Frances Mohr of Livonia, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Freda in 2002; son: Mike in 1976; two brothers: Arthur and Theodore (Rosie) Wallerich and sister: Anna Lee Kabnick. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 22, 2008, at the Sigourney United Methodist Church with Rev. John Hembry officiating. Burial will be at Richland Friends Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2008, at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney. A memorial fund has been established for the Sigourney United Methodist Church. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.
