Albert (Ken) Reynolds
April 14, 1922 - June 02, 2014
North English / formerly Fontanelle
Albert Kenneth (Ken) Reynolds, son of Ellsworth and Clara (Renner) Reynolds, was born April 14, 1922, on the family farm southeast of Fontanelle, Adair County, Iowa. He passed away at the home of his daughter, Kristie, on Sunday, June 1, 2014. Ken graduated from Fontanelle High School in 1940. He was active in band, playing the tuba. The band won first place in the state music contest that year and went on to Kansas City to compete in the national contest. He began farming with his father soon after graduation, and continued farming most of his life. On October 16, 1943, he was united in marriage to Carol Lucille Church in Maryville, Missouri. To this union 3 children were born: Cheryl, Kristie, and Michael. In 1987 Ken and his wife Carol moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where they enjoyed their retirement. On January 31, 2009, Carol passed away, and in November of that year Ken moved back to Iowa to live with his daughter, Kristie, and son-in-law, Bob. Ken enjoyed fishing, hunting, dancing, listening to and collecting many types of music (most notably country and western), politics, watching the Sydney, Iowa Rodeo, visiting with folks--especially his neighbors, and reminiscing. He was very outgoing, friendly, and never met a stranger. Ken was a John Deere tractor man--he enjoyed driving everything from a 1942 B to a 4-wheel drive. He loved his family and enjoyed playing with his kids, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. He was a member of the Fontanelle Methodist Church and the Fontanelle (later Greenfield) Masonic Lodge. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Helen Ticknor, and his wife of 65 years, Carol. He is survived by his children, Cheryl Smith and husband Calvin of rural North English, Iowa; Kristie Black and husband Bob of rural North English, Iowa; and Michael and wife MaLinda of rural Boone, Iowa; 4 grandchildren, Joseph Smith and wife Carmina of El Paso, Texas; James Smith and wife Maddie of Coos Bay, Oregon; Jason Smith of Iowa City, Iowa; and Nicolle Reynolds of Boone, Iowa; and 5 great grandchildren, James Michael Smith, Patricia Elaine Smith, Dulcey Smith, Isabella Smith, and Bernardo Smith; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. A special thank you to Iowa City Hospice for their invaluable help. The Powell Funeral Home in North English was in charge of the professional arrangements. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.powellfuneralhomes.com under obituaries. A memorial service will be held in Adair County at a later date.
