KEOTA- A. Dolores Baker, age 89, of Keota, died Monday, March 17, 2008, at the Manor House Care Center in Sigourney, following a brief illness. Dolores was born June 30, 1918, in Clear Creek Township, Keokuk County, Iowa, to Michael L. and Cecelia (Striegel) Hammes and received her education at Ss. Peter and Paul School. On November 15, 1938 she married John M. Baker at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Clear Creek. The couple lived and farmed in the Clear Creek community until moving into Keota in 1968. Dolores also worked at Advance Ross, Washington Manufacturing and Maplewood Manor. She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, where she was very active and had worked with Keokuk County Hospice. She loved to be with family and friends, playing with her nieces and nephews and always helping others. She loved dancing, playing cards, picking up hickory nuts, quilting, crocheting and gardening flowers. Survivors include four brothers: Edwin Hammes and John Marvin Hammes, both of Fairfield, Kenneth Hammes of Solon and Cletus Hammes, of Sigourney and four sisters: Eveleen Ulin, Donna Paarman, Elizabeth Conrad and Beatrice Clubb, all of Sigourney. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: John in 1971; a brother Lawrence "Bud" Hammes and two sisters: Leola Heisdorffer and Agatha Conrad. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota with Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery in rural Harper. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the church. A memorial fund has been established for Keokuk County Hospice, Keota Senior Center or Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.
