Kalona-Joseph J. Hershberger was born May 29, 1908, near Kalona, Iowa, the son of John D. and Magdalena (Miller) Hershberger. On Sept. 28, 1933, he was united in marriage to Emma Helmuth. He accepted Christ in his youth and remained a faithful member of Old Order Amish Church. Joseph died Saturday, February 6, 2010 at his home at the age of 101 year, 8 months and 8 days.
Joseph is survived by 2 sons and 7 daughters: Homer and Susie Hershberger of Leon, Iowa, Ruby and Junior L Miller of Phoenix Arizona, John D. and Alma Hershberger of Kalona, Tressa, and Jim Mallard of Oneida, Kentucky, Alta and Vernon Bontrager of Iowa City, Mary and Emory Miller of Spring Grove, PA,. Nina Hershberger, Linda Hershberger and Joye Hershberger all of Kalona; a daughter-in-law: Dorothy and Jonas Kinsinger of Oakland, Maryland. 26 grandchildren, 118 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife: Emma on May 19, 1999, a son: Gordon on Feb. 3, 1997, a daughter: Judith on Sept. 22, 1976, 2 brothers: Edwin and Dan Hershberger and 5 sisters: Lena Ropp, Anna Shetler, Ada Nissley, Ruth Hershberger and Barbara Hershberger.
The Funeral Service will be 9:30 am, Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at the Paul Beachy residence, 1069 Maple Ave., Kalona, Iowa. Paul T. Miller is the minister in charge. Burial will be in the East Union Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Paul Beachy residence starting at 2:00 pm Sunday, February 7, 2010 and Monday after 10:00 am. Memorials are for the Washington County Hospice.
